TMJ Treatments

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your lower jaw to your skull and are responsible for the movements required for chewing, speaking, and yawning. When these joints or the surrounding muscles become strained, injured, or misaligned, the resulting condition is known as a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). At Sunrise Dental Studio in Pasadena, Maryland, Dr. Afshin Nateghi evaluates and treats TMJ-related concerns to help patients find relief from jaw discomfort and restricted movement.

TMJ disorders can develop from a variety of causes, including teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism), arthritis, jaw injuries, stress, and bite misalignment. Symptoms may include clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth, difficulty chewing, jaw stiffness or locking, headaches, and pain radiating to the neck, shoulders, or ears. Because these symptoms can overlap with other conditions, a thorough evaluation is an important first step.

During your consultation, Dr. Nateghi will examine your jaw joints, bite, and surrounding muscles to assess the nature and severity of the problem. Treatment options vary depending on the underlying cause and may include custom night guards to reduce the effects of clenching and grinding, jaw relaxation exercises, lifestyle modifications, or restorative dental treatments to address bite issues. In some cases, a combination of approaches may be recommended.

Managing a TMJ disorder often requires ongoing attention. Dr. Nateghi will work with you to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed. If your condition requires care beyond what our office provides, we can coordinate a referral to an appropriate specialist.
