Your temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is the joint that connects your lower jaw to your head so that you can speak, eat, yawn and perform other daily actions. If this joint becomes injured, stressed or misaligned it impacts the quality of your day-to-day life and may cause significant discomfort. TMJ disorders may develop as a result of many factors, including stress, teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism), arthritis, or trauma and injury to the head, neck or jaw. Common signs of TMJ disorders include:

  • Grinding, clicking and popping sounds when moving your jaw
  • The inability to open your mouth wide
  • A locked or stuck jaw
  • Frequent headaches
  • Pain and tension in the neck, shoulders and ears
  • Pain when chewing and biting

During your initial consultation, our dentist will examine your jaws and mouth to determine the cause and severity of your TMJ disorder. There are a number of treatment strategies available, and based on the extent of the problem, our dentist will recommend one or more of these options for you. Common treatments for TMJ disorders include jaw and facial relaxation exercises, lifestyle changes, night guards, restorative dental treatments and jaw surgery. We will work closely with you to find the type of treatment that is right for your needs and can provide you with the best results for your oral health and function.
