Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to develop and typically emerge in the late teens or early twenties. Because they arrive after the rest of the adult teeth are already in place, there is often not enough room in the jaw for them to come in properly. At Sunrise Dental Studio in Pasadena, Maryland, Dr. Afshin Nateghi evaluates wisdom teeth and performs extractions for non-impacted teeth when removal is recommended.
When wisdom teeth do not have enough space to erupt fully, they can become partially trapped beneath the gum line or grow in at an angle. This can lead to a range of problems, including crowding of adjacent teeth, tooth decay in hard-to-clean areas, gum inflammation and infection around the partially erupted tooth, and in some cases, cyst formation. Even wisdom teeth that appear to come in normally may be difficult to keep clean because of their location at the very back of the mouth.
During a consultation, Dr. Nateghi will examine your mouth and take X-rays to assess the position, development, and condition of your wisdom teeth. If removal is recommended, he will explain the procedure, discuss anesthesia options, and provide you with a clear picture of what to expect. Aftercare instructions will be provided to help manage swelling and promote healing during your recovery period.
Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. If yours have fully erupted, are properly aligned, and can be cleaned effectively, Dr. Nateghi may recommend monitoring them during your regular dental checkups instead. If a wisdom tooth does need to come out and the situation involves impaction or complexity beyond a standard tooth extraction, we can coordinate a referral to an oral surgeon.
