Root Canal Treatments

When the soft tissue inside a tooth — known as the pulp — becomes infected or inflamed, a root canal treatment may be needed to save the tooth and prevent the infection from spreading. At Sunrise Dental Studio in Pasadena, Maryland, Dr. Afshin Nateghi performs root canal treatments to help patients preserve their natural teeth and relieve the discomfort associated with pulp infection.

The pulp of a tooth contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. It can become infected due to deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, or trauma. Symptoms of a pulp infection may include persistent toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, swelling or tenderness in the nearby gums, and darkening of the tooth. If you experience any of these signs, it is important to schedule an evaluation promptly.

During a root canal procedure, Dr. Nateghi numbs the area with local anesthesia, then carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp from the inside of the tooth. The root canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected before being filled with a biocompatible material and sealed. In most cases, a dental crown is placed over the treated tooth afterward to restore its strength and protect it from future damage.

A root canal treatment is designed to save a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted. Keeping your natural tooth helps maintain proper chewing function, bite alignment, and the appearance of your smile. After treatment, the tooth can continue to function normally with proper care, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups at Sunrise Dental Studio.
